How Age Is Calculated: Years, Months and Days

Calculate your exact age from your date of birth. Learn how age calculators work, why your age varies by counting method, and practical uses beyond birthdays.

Age example: someone born March 15, 1995 is 31 years, 7 months and 11 days old on October 26, 2026, or 11,548 days.

"How old are you?" seems like a simple question. But ask a programmer, a lawyer, and a Korean grandmother, and you'll get three different answers. Age is more nuanced than you'd think.

The Simple Answer

Your age in years is the number of birthdays you've had. Born on March 15, 1995? On October 26, 2026, you're 31 years old. Simple enough.

But that answer ignores months and days. Your exact age right now, down to the day, is harder to compute in your head — especially when months have different numbers of days and there's the occasional leap year thrown in.

That's why age calculators exist. Our Age Calculator takes your date of birth and tells you your exact age in years, months, and days. The Age in Detail tool goes further — breaking your age into total months, weeks, days, hours, and even seconds.

How Age Calculators Work

The calculation seems straightforward until you try to code it. Here's what makes it tricky:

Months have different lengths. January has 31 days, February has 28 (or 29), April has 30. If you were born on January 31st and today is March 2nd, are you 1 month and 2 days old, or 1 month and 1 day? It depends on how you handle the fact that February is shorter.

Leap years. Born on February 29th? In non-leap years, when exactly do you turn a year older — February 28th or March 1st? Different countries have different legal answers.

Time zones. If you were born at 11 PM in New York but it was already the next day in London, which date counts? For most purposes, the date on your birth certificate is what matters.

A good age calculator handles all of these edge cases. It counts complete years first, then complete months, then remaining days — the way humans naturally think about age.

Why Your Age Varies by Counting Method

In most Western countries, you turn one year old on your first birthday. You're zero years old for your entire first year of life.

In traditional Korean age counting (known as "Korean age"), you're one at birth and everyone ages up together on New Year's Day. So a baby born on December 31st is "two years old" the very next day by Korean reckoning. South Korea officially switched to the international system in 2023, but the cultural practice persists.

These aren't wrong — they're different conventions. But if you're filling out a government form or a legal document, use the international standard: complete years since your date of birth.

Practical Uses for Age Calculators

Age calculators aren't just for curiosity. Here are situations where knowing an exact age matters.

Legal age thresholds

Need to know if someone is exactly 18 years old for a contract, or exactly 65 for pension eligibility? "Roughly 18" doesn't cut it for legal purposes. Courts and government agencies need exact dates.

Insurance and finance

Life insurance premiums change at certain age brackets. Knowing your exact age to the day helps you time applications for the best rates.

Medical tracking

Pediatric growth charts use age in months. A 14-month-old and a 17-month-old have very different developmental benchmarks. Parents and doctors need precise age calculations.

Milestone planning

How many days until you turn 30? How old will you be on a specific date? Combine the Age Calculator with the Date Difference Calculator to find out.

Employment eligibility

Some jobs have minimum or maximum age requirements. Retirement age calculations need to be precise, especially when pension benefits depend on the exact date you reach eligibility.

Fun Facts About Age

  • The youngest person alive was born within the last few seconds. Their age in days? Zero.
  • A billion seconds is about 31.7 years. You probably didn't celebrate your billionth second, but you could calculate when it happened.
  • 10,000 days old happens at about 27 years and 4 months. Some people throw "10K day" parties.
  • Your half-birthday is exactly 182 or 183 days from your birthday — a fun excuse for a mid-year celebration.
