Black Friday is the day after US Thanksgiving — the fourth Friday of November.

Black Friday kicks off the holiday shopping season with major discounts in stores and online. The name is often explained as the day retailers move from loss ('in the red') to profit ('in the black'). Many deals now start days earlier and run through Cyber Monday.

Where Black Friday came from

Philadelphia police in the 1950s and 60s used "Black Friday" to describe the traffic jams and crowds the day after Thanksgiving. Retailers later recast it as the day stores go "into the black", and the name spread nationwide in the 1980s and 90s.

Many sales now start early in November. Comparing prices over a few weeks is the easiest way to tell a real discount from a normal price.
