How Many Days Until Diwali?
When is Diwali?
Diwali falls on the new-moon night (Amavasya) of the Hindu month of Kartika, usually in October or November.
Diwali, the festival of lights, celebrates the victory of light over darkness. Homes are lit with diyas and lanterns, families exchange sweets, and fireworks fill the night. It's a major holiday in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Singapore, and for Hindu, Sikh, and Jain communities worldwide.

The stories behind Diwali
Diwali is linked to several stories: Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana, Lakshmi the goddess of prosperity, and for Sikhs, Bandi Chhor Divas, the release of Guru Hargobind from prison. For Jains it marks the nirvana of Mahavira.
Celebrations run over five days, from Dhanteras, when many people buy gold or kitchenware, to Bhai Dooj, which celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters.
