Halloween falls on October 31 every year.
Halloween grew out of the Celtic festival of Samhain and the eve of All Saints' Day. Today it's known for costumes, trick-or-treating, carved pumpkins, and haunted houses, and it's one of the biggest retail seasons in the US after Christmas.

From Samhain to trick-or-treating
Samhain marked the end of the harvest in Celtic Ireland and Scotland, when people believed the boundary with the spirit world grew thin. Irish and Scottish immigrants brought the custom to North America in the 1800s, where turnip lanterns became carved pumpkins.
Trick-or-treating became common across the US in the 1950s. Today Americans spend billions of dollars each year on costumes, candy and decorations.
