Where the tradition comes from
The custom comes from Candlemas folklore brought to Pennsylvania by German immigrants, who watched a badger or hedgehog for signs of spring. In America, the groundhog took its place.
Punxsutawney Phil's forecasts are made at Gobbler's Knob, and the 1993 film Groundhog Day, starring Bill Murray, made the event famous worldwide. Other towns have their own forecasters, such as Wiarton Willie in Canada.
