Why January 26?
In 1930 the Indian National Congress declared January 26 as Purna Swaraj Day, the day it called for complete independence. When the constitution was ready, it was brought into force on the same date in 1950 to honour that declaration.
The Delhi parade features military contingents, state tableaux and a flypast, and each year a foreign head of state is invited as chief guest. The celebrations end on January 29 with the Beating Retreat ceremony.
