From Dominion Day to Canada Day
The British North America Act united the provinces of Canada, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick on July 1, 1867. The holiday was called Dominion Day until 1982, when it was renamed Canada Day.
When July 1 falls on a Sunday, the statutory holiday moves to Monday, July 2. In Quebec, July 1 is also the traditional moving day, when many leases end.
Planning time off around Canada Day
Canada Day 2026 falls on a Wednesday, in the middle of the week, so a long weekend would take two days of leave.
Canada Day 2027 falls on a Thursday. Taking the Friday after off as well turns it into a four-day break for one day of leave.
