Why July 4?
The Continental Congress actually voted for independence on July 2, 1776. The Declaration of Independence, mostly written by Thomas Jefferson, was adopted two days later, and July 4 became the date Americans celebrate.
Congress made it a federal holiday in 1870. It's one of the busiest travel days of the summer and the biggest night of the year for fireworks in the US.
