Where Labor Day came from
The first Labor Day parade was held in New York City in 1882, organised by unions campaigning for shorter working days. Congress made it a federal holiday in 1894.
Most other countries mark International Workers' Day on May 1 instead. In the US, Labor Day is also the traditional end of the summer season for many resorts and public pools.
