How Memorial Day began
It started after the Civil War as Decoration Day, when people decorated soldiers' graves with flowers. The name Memorial Day gradually took over, and since 1971 it has been held on the last Monday in May.
A National Moment of Remembrance asks Americans to pause at 3 p.m. local time. Many families visit cemeteries, and red poppies are worn in memory of those who died.
Planning time off around Memorial Day
Memorial Day 2026 falls on a Monday, giving a three-day weekend wherever it's a day off. Roads, flights and hotels tend to be busier around those dates, so book early.
Memorial Day 2027 falls on a Monday, giving a three-day weekend wherever it's a day off. Roads, flights and hotels tend to be busier around those dates, so book early.
