Sonora Smart Dodd, raised by her widowed father in Spokane, Washington, organised the first Father's Day celebration in 1910. It took decades to become official, and President Nixon signed it into law in 1972.
Many Catholic countries, including Spain, Italy and Portugal, celebrate on March 19, the feast of Saint Joseph. Germany marks it on Ascension Day.
