The history of Juneteenth
Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston on June 19, 1865, and announced that enslaved people in Texas were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Formerly enslaved people celebrated the anniversary the next year, and the tradition grew from there.
Celebrations include readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, cookouts and red foods such as strawberry soda and red velvet cake, which stand for resilience.
Planning time off around Juneteenth
Juneteenth 2026 falls on a Friday, giving a three-day weekend wherever it's a day off. Roads, flights and hotels tend to be busier around those dates, so book early.
Juneteenth 2027 falls on a Saturday. Many countries move a public holiday that lands on a weekend to the nearest weekday, often the Friday before, so check your official holiday list before booking leave.
