Washington's Birthday and Presidents' Day
The holiday began in 1879 to mark George Washington's birthday on February 22. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved it to the third Monday of February from 1971, so it now always falls between February 15 and 21, never on Washington's actual birthday.
Several states also use the day to honour Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday is February 12.
